5 great ice cream shops

5 great ice cream shops

After a sizzling hot July and with more heat forecast for the rest of the summer, finding an easy (and delicious!) way to cool off is a must. And what says summer more than a yummy scoop — or three — of ice cream? Ottawa is blessed with a ton of spots to get your fix. Here are 5 of our favourites:

  1. #1: Chocolats Favoris

    Simple and delectable, this Quebec-based chain launched in Ottawa a few years ago with its Orléans location. The shop has one side devoted to chocolates treats, truffles, fondue sauces and more, while the other is all ice cream, sorbet and other frozen delights. Personalize your choice with a sauce bar of 12 dipping sauces.
    Where: 180 Vanguard Dr., Orléans (also in Gatineau, Barrhaven & Kanata)
    Info: 613-824-3535;

  2. #2: La Cigale

    This is a must-stop spot for many visiting Chelsea or Gatineau Park next door. It’s a great destination for a leisurely afternoon, with a large backyard dotted with Muskoka chairs and toys for the kids.
    Where: 14 Ch. Scott, Chelsea
    Info: 819-827-6060; on facebook

  3. #3: Stella Luna Gelato Café

    Stella Luna has been a staple in Old Ottawa South since 2011, winning handfuls of awards along the way. It now has a Hintonburg location as well. Famous for its gelato, there are also plenty of other sweet treats.
    Where: 1103 Bank St. (or 1130 Wellington St. W.)
    Info: 613-523-1116;

  4. #4: Lois ‘n’ Frima’s

    This spot has been a fixture in the ByWard Market since the 1980s, creating more than 60 recipes and making ice cream in small batches. In peak season there are more than 20 flavours to choose from.
    Where: 71 George St. (also in Overbrook, at 300 Coventry Rd., and Stittsville)
    Info: 613-720-7707;

  5. #5: Moo Shu

    This is small-batch ice cream with Asian flare and an ever-changing menu that keeps you guessing. Note that the shop is closed Tuesdays. Vegan and gluten-free options available.
